Birth-chart reading
Aspect Grid
Direct answer
Find the two labels that meet at a cell, decode the aspect symbol, and read the printed orb as distance from exactness. Then return to the chart wheel for signs, houses, and visual pattern; the grid summarizes relationships but does not interpret them by itself.
An aspect grid is a table that compares chart points pair by pair. Each populated cell identifies the angular relationship between the planet named by its row and the planet named by its column, often adding the orb and applying or separating status.
Aspect Grid means a table or visual layout showing planetary aspects in a chart.
A structural orientation; exact placements depend on the chart or technique being discussed.Quick facts
| Grid element | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Diagonal | A point compared with itself, usually left blank or used for labels. |
| Triangle of cells | Only half the matrix is needed because each pair appears twice in a full square. |
| Aspect glyph | Conjunction, opposition, trine, square, sextile, quincunx, or enabled minor aspect. |
| Orb number | The absolute distance from the aspect’s exact angle, not the distance between planets themselves. |
The Instruments
Ten readings, worked out from your own birth chart
An instrument is a reading this house works out for you. Give your birth date, time and place once, and each one reads today’s real sky against the chart you were born under. Eight are personal; two are calendars anyone can open. A free account opens one instrument a day. The plans open every instrument, every day.
- Natal Chart Every planet, house and aspect in your chart
- Active Transits Where the planets are now, read against your chart
- Daily Counsel What to pursue today, and what to leave alone
- Personal Timing Your best days to decide, weeks ahead
- Fellowship Your chart and another, read side by side
- Theme of the Day The one thing today is asking of you
- Sacred Numbers Your life path, your cycles, your name in numbers
- Aeolian Harmonics Classical music chosen to match your chart
- Mercury Retrograde Every Mercury retrograde this year, with its dates Open to all
- Void-of-Course Moon When the Moon is between signs, hour by hour Open to all
Why the grid is triangular
If the Sun’s relationship with Mars appears in one cell, Mars’s relationship with the Sun would duplicate the same geometry in the mirrored cell. Most grids therefore display only the lower or upper triangle, using the diagonal to align point names. Read from both edges carefully: a symbol that seems to belong to Venus and Jupiter may actually sit at the Venus-Saturn intersection if labels are offset. Color helps on some charts, but glyph shape and a legend are essential for accessibility and for monochrome printing.
Exact angle, orb, and applying motion
A square is exact at 90 degrees; if two points are 92°15′ apart, the orb is 2°15′. Software may print 2.15 as decimal degrees or 2°15′ as degrees and arcminutes, which are not the same notation. Applying means the relevant distance is moving toward exactness, while separating means it is moving away. Determining that status requires speeds and direction, especially around retrograde stations. Some grids use a plus or minus sign for phase, while others use it for signed orb, so consult the legend.
Why two aspect grids disagree
Programs differ in point lists, maximum orbs, luminary allowances, minor aspects, zodiac, node type, and whether parallels are included. One may show only Ptolemaic aspects; another fills cells with quintiles, septiles, or harmonic families. A chart including Chiron and four asteroids will naturally have a larger matrix than a ten-planet chart. Before assuming a calculation error, compare exact longitudes and settings. A transparent grid exposes its legend and orb table so a reader can reproduce every cell.
From individual cells to a coherent chart reading
Start with the tightest major aspects and the Sun, Moon, chart ruler, and angular planets. Look for repeated participation: a planet connected to four others may anchor a configuration. Confirm T-squares, grand trines, yods, and other patterns on the wheel because a list of cells can hide spatial structure or include aspects outside the pattern’s chosen orb. Finally add signs, houses, dignity, and rulership. The grid shows that two functions are related; it cannot decide whether a square becomes productive effort, recurring conflict, or both in a particular life.

Common questions
Why is half my aspect grid blank?
The blank half would duplicate the same planet pairs. A triangular matrix is a compact design, not missing data.
What does the number beside an aspect symbol mean?
Usually it is the orb from exactness, expressed in degrees or degrees and minutes. Check the legend for signs marking applying or separating motion.
Why does the grid show an aspect another chart omits?
The two charts may use different orb limits, enabled aspects, point lists, node settings, or underlying longitudes. Compare settings before interpretation.
