Alcyone and the "Grand Central Sun"
Tara Mata, following Sri Yukteswar, names Alcyone, the brightest star of the Pleiades, as the center our Sun was once thought to circle. She says the ancients called it the central sun and lists the names: the Babylonian Temennu, "foundation stone", the Arabic Kimah and Al Wasat, "the central one", and the Hindu Amba, "mother". She connects it to Job 38, where God asks whether Job can bind the cluster of the Pleiades.
In her account the Sun moves toward and away from this center over the 24,000-year cycle, and that motion is what drives the precession of the equinoxes and the rise and fall of the yugas. This is not a binary-star theory but a central-sun theory.
Astronomers do not accept it. Precession is caused by the gravitational pull of the Sun and Moon on Earth's equatorial bulge, and the center of the galaxy lies toward Sagittarius, not in the Pleiades. The idea has a respectable ancestor in the nineteenth-century astronomer Johann Heinrich von Mädler, who proposed Alcyone as the galactic center in 1846.

The Pleiades and the Age of Taurus
The Pleiades sit in Taurus, and Hill argues that the cluster belongs to the Age of the Bull, when the spring equinox lay in Taurus and the bull was worshipped as Apis, as Baal, and in the golden calf. He reads the Pleiades as one of the symbols carried over into the Masonic arms. That reading is his own and comes from a tract aimed at showing that religion descends from sun and star worship.
What is solid is the association with the calendar: the cluster's rising and setting marked seasons for farmers and sailors long before the zodiac signs were drawn.
