What sets Mars Retrograde apart
Mars turns retrograde about every 26 months, the longest wait of the five visible planets, and keeps the backward course for roughly 60 to 80 days. The middle of the loop falls at the opposition, when Mars rises as the Sun sets and is at its brightest, so the planet is most visible just when it goes backward. Ptolemy's account of it is in Almagest Book X.
