What sets Alchemy apart
Alchemy names a craft that worked on matter and on meaning at once: the effort to purify, perfect or transmute substances, with metals as the model case. Its writers speak in a code of planets, animals, colours and kings, so one recipe can be read as laboratory work, as medicine, or as a figure of inner change. - End of the field: Robert Boyle's The Sceptical Chymist (1661) helped separate chemistry from alchemy
