What sets Hermeticism apart
The name points to a body of Greek and Latin texts, not to one doctrine: teachings put in the mouth of Hermes Trismegistus, the Greek Hermes joined with the Egyptian Thoth. The philosophical Hermetica (the Corpus Hermeticum and the Asclepius) are usually dated to the first three centuries of the Christian era. The astrological, alchemical and magical writings that carry his name are a separate and later body, and the two are often run together.

- Emerald Tablet: a short text known first in Arabic, then Latin; its line 'as above, so below' is later than the Corpus
Often mistaken for something else: Hermetic Qabalah is a nineteenth-century Western blend of Hermetic and Kabbalistic symbols; Hermeticism proper is the older family of texts attributed to Hermes.
The law of correspondence
Thomas Burgoyne, in Celestial Dynamics (1896), calls the Hermetic law of correspondence the one grand key. He quotes it in two forms, that which is on the earth is as that which is above, and "as it is above, so it is below". Man, he says, is a universe in miniature, and the twelve signs correspond to twelve divisions of the human organism. See As Above, So Below and Microcosm and Macrocosm.
The Brotherhood of Luxor, which Burgoyne is often linked to, is not mentioned in the pages we have.
The alphabet of the stars
Burgoyne says the language of the stars has twenty-two characters, the number of the Hebrew alphabet. The seven ancient planets are the vowels, Uranus and Neptune the diphthongs, the twelve signs the consonants, and the Earth, shown by a circled cross, the twenty-second, a mere cipher, as the last Hebrew letter is. Seven and two and twelve make twenty-one, and the Earth completes the twenty-two.
He also rejects reincarnation as an unverifiable delusion and says it would make scientific astrology impossible, which surprises readers who assume Hermetic and Theosophical writers teach it.
What the sources hold
The ancient Hermetic writings, the Corpus Hermeticum, are not in the books we have read. What the library gives is a late nineteenth-century Hermetic astrology, in Burgoyne, with an older Hellenistic technical tradition in Ptolemy, Dorotheus and Firmicus Maternus. Tara Mata lists the Books of Hermes among the scriptures she places before the Kali Yuga. Treat those as claims by their authors.
