What is the Lot of Nemesis?
The Lot of Nemesis is one of the seven Hermetic lots of Paulus Alexandrinus and the one paired with Saturn. By day, measure the arc from Saturn to the Lot of Fortune and lay it off from the Ascendant; by night, from Fortune to Saturn.
Paulus gives it a dark reading: the powers below the earth, what is hidden, exposure, weakness, exile, loss and the manner of death. None of these is forecast here. The lot is read instead as the topic of what lies outside a person's control and what has to be accepted.

The formula
Each lot is found the same way: measure the arc from the first point to the second, always forward through the signs, and lay that arc off from the Ascendant. In longitude, "from A to B" is the Ascendant plus B minus A, reduced to the circle. By night the two points swap places.
The worked example, the same invented day chart on every lot page (longitudes counted from 0 Aries in brackets): Ascendant 10 Libra (190), Sun 20 Aries (20), Moon 5 Gemini (65), Mercury 2 Aries (2), Venus 14 Taurus (44), Mars 8 Leo (128), Jupiter 25 Sagittarius (265) and Saturn 12 Capricorn (282). The Sun is above the horizon, so it is a day chart. Fortune is 235 by day and 145 by night.
- Day chart: Ascendant 190 + Fortune 235 - Saturn 282 = 143, which is 23 degrees of Leo.
- Night chart: Ascendant 190 + Saturn 282 - Fortune 145 = 327, which is 27 degrees of Aquarius.
Reading it calmly
Ancient astrologers wrote about death and misfortune plainly, and the lot of Nemesis gathers much of that language. The Great Almanac reports it and does not use it. No lot can say when or how a person will suffer, and none is read that way here. What remains useful is Saturn's question: what in this area of life is not mine to control, and how do I carry it well?
The story behind Lot of Nemesis
Paulus Alexandrinus gives the Lot of Nemesis in chapter 23 of his Introductory Matters (378). Nemesis was the Greek goddess of due measure and retribution, which fits the lot's pairing with Saturn, the planet of limits.

Lot of Nemesis in practice: an example
In the worked example, a day chart with Saturn at 12 degrees of Capricorn and Fortune at 25 degrees of Scorpio, the Lot of Nemesis falls at 23 degrees of Leo.

Common questions
What is the Lot of Nemesis?
The Lot of Nemesis is the Hermetic lot paired with Saturn, found by day from Saturn to the Lot of Fortune and by night the reverse, laid off from the Ascendant, and read for what is hidden and what cannot be avoided.
How do you calculate the Lot of Nemesis?
By day, the Ascendant plus the Lot of Fortune minus Saturn. By night, the Ascendant plus Saturn minus Fortune. You need Fortune first.
What does the Lot of Nemesis mean?
Paulus ties it to hidden things and the powers below the earth, with a list of hardships. The Great Almanac reads it as what lies outside a person's control, and never as a forecast of loss.
Should I worry about my Lot of Nemesis?
No. It is a topic from an ancient text, not a prediction. Its sign shows an area of life that asks for acceptance and patience, which is Saturn's old lesson.
