How the Lot of Necessity is found
Each lot is found the same way: measure the arc from the first point to the second, always forward through the signs, and lay that arc off from the Ascendant. In longitude, "from A to B" is the Ascendant plus B minus A, reduced to the circle. By night the two points swap places.
In Paulus Alexandrinus's set, the one The Great Almanac uses, it runs from Mercury to Fortune by day and the reverse by night.
The worked example, the same invented day chart on every lot page (longitudes counted from 0 Aries in brackets): Ascendant 10 Libra (190), Sun 20 Aries (20), Moon 5 Gemini (65), Mercury 2 Aries (2), Venus 14 Taurus (44), Mars 8 Leo (128), Jupiter 25 Sagittarius (265) and Saturn 12 Capricorn (282). The Sun is above the horizon, so it is a day chart. Fortune is 235 by day and 145 by night.
- Day chart, from Mercury to Fortune: Ascendant 190 + Fortune 235 - Mercury 2 = 423, less 360 is 63, which is 3 degrees of Gemini.
- Night chart, from Fortune to Mercury: Ascendant 190 + Mercury 2 - Fortune 145 = 47, which is 17 degrees of Taurus.
Vettius Valens gives Necessity differently, from the arc between Spirit and Fortune, so two sources can place it in different signs. Say which formula you use.

Paulus's reading, and a gentler one
Paulus pairs Necessity with Mercury and reads it for constraints, subordination, struggles, enmities and condemnations. The Great Almanac reads it as the area of life where a person meets limits they did not choose and has to think their way through, which is Mercury's work. It is never a forecast of conflict.
