Can Christians Use Birth Charts?
Scripture holds two things together: the heavens were made "for signs, and for seasons", and the people of God are forbidden to consult them in God's place.

What the Bible says
Scripture holds two things together. The lights of heaven are made "for signs, and for seasons" (Genesis 1:14), "the heavens declare the glory of God" (Psalm 19:1), and wise men from the east followed a star to the child Jesus (Matthew 2:2). Yet the Law forbids divination and "an observer of times" (Deuteronomy 18:10), Isaiah mocks Babylon's "astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators" who cannot save it (Isaiah 47:13), and Jeremiah says, "be not dismayed at the signs of heaven" (Jeremiah 10:2).

What Augustine decided
Augustine consulted astrologers as a young man and turned against them. In the Confessions (VII.6) he tells of two children born at the same moment, one to a wealthy house and one to a slave, whose lives could not have been more different; in the City of God (book V) he points to the twins Esau and Jacob. His conclusion, that the hour of birth cannot overrule a person or God, became the church's settled view.
What the medieval Christians did
The Middle Ages kept astrology alive inside Christendom. Thomas Aquinas taught that the heavenly bodies act on the body and its passions but cannot compel the will: astrologers can often foretell what most people will do, since most follow their passions, but not what a free person must do (Summa Theologiae I, q. 115, a. 4). Physicians cast charts, and cathedrals such as Chartres carved the zodiac beside the labors of the months.
Where the churches stand now
The Catechism of the Catholic Church lists "consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading" among the forms of divination to be rejected (2116), and most Protestant and Orthodox teachers agree. Christians who still look at a birth chart do so as a description of temperament and timing, never as guidance in God's place: the line every tradition draws is what, or whom, you trust.
Reading it with discernment
The test offered here is the fruit: whether a question about the heavens or the unseen leads toward humility, prayer and love of neighbor, or toward fear, secrecy and control. God first, and every created sign after him.
Practical boundaries
Authority
God, Scripture, conscience, wise counsel, and love of neighbor stand above every reading.
Fruit
A practice should be judged by what it forms: humility or pride, peace or fear, responsibility or avoidance.
Limits
The hidden world is not a playground for control. Curiosity stays accountable and prayerful.
Discernment checklist
- Does this interpretation increase humility instead of pride or fear?
- Does it preserve responsibility instead of blaming the sky?
- Does it lead toward prayer, repair, patience, courage, and love of neighbor?
- Would a wise friend recognize the fruit as good?

Common questions
Is it a sin for a Christian to look at a birth chart?
The churches teach that consulting astrology as divination is a sin (Deuteronomy 18:10-12; Catechism of the Catholic Church 2116). Some Christians still read a chart as symbolic language for temperament; the line every tradition draws is trust, what you consult in God's place.
Did the wise men use astrology?
Matthew calls them magoi, "wise men from the east", who "have seen his star" (Matthew 2:1-2): almost certainly star-watchers of the Persian or Babylonian kind. Scripture records their worship without endorsing their art, and the star's road ended in Scripture's own answer, Bethlehem (Matthew 2:5-6).
What did Augustine say about astrology?
That it cannot be true: twins born in the same hour, like Esau and Jacob, lead different lives (City of God, book V), and a child born at the same moment as a rich man's son may be born a slave (Confessions VII.6).
What did Thomas Aquinas say about astrology?
That the stars act on bodies and passions but not directly on the will, so astrologers can often predict what most people will do but never what a free person must choose (Summa Theologiae I, q. 115, a. 4).
