What the tradition actually offers
Traditional election looks at the Moon above all, its phase, its sign, and what it applies to next, on the reasoning that the Moon carries the matter forward. Waxing is preferred for beginnings, waning for reduction and endings. Beyond that it considers whether the significators of the matter are well placed. It is a coherent internal system, and it is a system of preference rather than permission.
The honest limit
No election makes a bad decision good. A wedding on a beautiful chart between two people who have not had the necessary conversation is still that. The date is the smallest variable in almost any undertaking, and the practice is at its most respectable when it says so.
What it suits
Beginnings that are genuinely yours to schedule: signing something, opening something, starting a course of work, holding a conversation that has been waiting. It suits these because you actually have a choice of dates. It suits an operation date or a court date far less, because there the practical constraints are close to absolute and should be.
A workable rule
Give the sky the last ten per cent of the decision and never the first ninety. If the symbolism and the practicalities conflict, the practicalities win, and a tradition worth keeping will not ask you to choose otherwise.
