The 72 names of God
In Jewish mysticism the Shem ha-Mephorash, the "explicit name" of God, is drawn from three verses of Exodus: 14:19, 14:20 and 14:21, the night the angel of God moved behind Israel and the sea was divided. Each of the three verses has exactly seventy-two Hebrew letters.
Write the verses one above another, the first read forwards, the second backwards and the third forwards again, and the letters stand in seventy-two columns of three. Each column is read as a name of three letters: seventy-two names, which the kabbalists took as names of God and later writers as the names of seventy-two angels.

The 72 spirits of the Goetia
The same number orders the most famous catalogue of spirits in Western magic. The Ars Goetia, the first book of the seventeenth-century Lesser Key of Solomon, lists seventy-two spirits said to have been shut by Solomon in a vessel of brass, from Bael, the first, to Andromalius, the seventy-second. Johann Weyer's earlier Pseudomonarchia Daemonum (1577) gives sixty-nine.
Later occult writers set the two lists against each other: seventy-two angels of the Shem ha-Mephorash, one for each of the seventy-two spirits.
The 72 translators and the 72 disciples
The Letter of Aristeas tells how the Law was first put into Greek by seventy-two elders, six from each of the twelve tribes, who finished their work in seventy-two days. The translation is still called the Septuagint, "the seventy", after the rounded number.
In Luke 10:1 Jesus sends out seventy others ahead of him, two by two. Some of the oldest manuscripts read seventy-two, which is why modern Bibles differ on the number.
Seventy-two degrees, and seventy-two years
In astrology 72 degrees is the quintile, a fifth of the circle, one of the minor aspects Johannes Kepler proposed in the seventeenth century; astrologers read it as talent, style and a gift for making things.
The sky gives the number a second meaning. The precession of the equinoxes carries the stars against the zodiac by about one degree every seventy-two years, the slow drift behind the astrological ages of Pisces and Aquarius.
Seventy-two beyond the Bible
The number recurs far from Scripture. Chinese tradition counts seventy-two disciples of Confucius who mastered the six arts; in Journey to the West the Monkey King commands seventy-two transformations; the heroes of the Water Margin are thirty-six heavenly and seventy-two earthly stars; and the old Chinese calendar divides the year into seventy-two pentads of five days each.
