Ptolemy examines four candidates for the point that carries a person's vitality: the Sun, the Moon, the ascendant and the Part of Fortune (Tetrabiblos III.13). The medieval Arabic and Latin tradition calls the chosen point the hyleg. In Dykes's account the word is also used loosely as a synonym for an almuten.
