The four faces in scripture
Ezekiel 1:10 gives each living creature four faces: a man, a lion, an ox and an eagle. Revelation 4:7 lists the four creatures round the throne as a lion, a calf, a man and a flying eagle. The later church tradition tied them to the four evangelists, with the man for Matthew, the lion for Mark, the ox for Luke and the eagle for John.
The text says nothing about the zodiac. The zodiac reading is a later argument, and it is the subject of this page.
Hill's reading: Leo, Taurus, Aquarius and the eagle
J. H. Hill, in the 1890s, reads the four creatures as the four fixed signs, which marked the four quarters of the year when they were Leo, Taurus, Aquarius and Scorpio. For Scorpio he substitutes the eagle, Aquila, so that the four are the lion, the bull, the man and the eagle.
He goes on to name them as the four corner-keepers of the sky and equates them with the archangels and the evangelists. The Chaldean names he gives are Gabriel, Michael, Raphael and Uriel, and the Christian names Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. He pairs the creatures into two halves of the year: the Cherubim, Taurus with Aquarius, a winged bull with a man's head, for the half in which the days lengthen, and the Seraphim, Leo with the eagle, a winged lion with an eagle's head, for the half in which they shorten.
These are Hill's arguments. Scholars of the Bible read the four faces differently.
Tara Mata's reading: four illusions of Maya
Tara Mata, writing in 1932 and 1933, reads the four beasts of Revelation 4 as the four powers of Maya, the illusions the soul must master, one for each yuga:
- Kali, the iron age: atomic form
- Dwapara, the bronze age: space
- Treta, the silver age: time
- Satya, the golden age: vibration, the sound Aum
She reads the twenty-four elders of Revelation 4:4 as the twenty-four principles (tatwa) of Hindu thought, and the seven spirits as seven attributes of one of them. The reading is hers and ties Revelation to Sri Yukteswar's cycle. See Kali Yuga.
