At the end, John saw a new heaven and a new earth, and the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven.

The whole story

John saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first had passed away, and there was no more sea. He heard a great voice out of heaven: “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them” (Revelation 21:3). “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying” (Revelation 21:4).

An old woman lifts her face to a warm light from above, her last tear drying, a new green earth behind her.

The city had a wall great and high with twelve gates, every gate one pearl, bearing the names of the twelve tribes, and twelve foundations bearing the names of the twelve apostles. Its street was pure gold, as it were transparent glass. John saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it, and no need of the sun, for the glory of God did lighten it.

The new Jerusalem glows with its own light behind a high jasper wall with gates of pearl and a street of gold.

A pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, flowed from the throne, and on either side of it stood the tree of life, bearing twelve manner of fruits, its leaves for the healing of the nations. So the Bible ends where it began, with a river, a tree and God with his people, and with its last prayer: “Even so, come, Lord Jesus” (Revelation 22:20).

People of every nation walk beside the crystal river of life under the fruit-laden trees of life.

And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

Where it happened

Jerusalem.

The city is known; the gold mark is the Temple Mount, where Solomon’s temple stood.

Sources and editorial method

Research and editorial references used for this page include:

Every story is told from the King James Bible, and from the Book of Enoch in R. H. Charles’s translation (1917) where a story names it. Every quotation was checked word for word against those texts. Where a place is not known, the page says so. The paintings and the narration were made for the house.
