The whole story

To Thyatira speaks the Son of God, with eyes like unto a flame of fire and feet like fine brass. He knows its charity, service, faith and patience, and that its last works are more than the first. Yet it suffered that woman Jezebel, who called herself a prophetess and taught his servants to commit fornication and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.

A proud woman teacher in purple sways believers in Thyatira as an old couple turn toward a bright doorway.

He gave her space to repent, and she repented not. The faithful who had not known the depths of Satan, as they speak, were told only to hold fast till he come, and to him that overcometh he promised power over the nations, and the morning star.

A believer on a rooftop in Thyatira gazes at the bright morning star shining alone above the hills at dawn.

Thyatira was a town of trade guilds, of dyers, potters, bronze-smiths and tanners, and the guilds’ feasts in honor of their gods made faithfulness hard for a Christian craftsman. Lydia, the seller of purple whom Paul met at Philippi, came from there. Little of the old town shows today in the middle of Akhisar.

The few ruins of old Thyatira, columns and a broken Roman wall among plane trees, with the plain beyond.

I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first.

Sources and editorial method

Research and editorial references used for this page include:

Every story is told from the King James Bible, and from the Book of Enoch in R. H. Charles’s translation (1917) where a story names it. Every quotation was checked word for word against those texts. Where a place is not known, the page says so. The paintings and the narration were made for the house.
