Strength upright

The quiet strength that tames rather than fights. Strength reflects courage expressed as patience, compassion and steady self-trust.

Upright, Strength puts courage at the front of the picture, with patience and gentle power close behind it. The plate’s own image, a woman in a white robe garlanded with flowers gently closing the jaws of a calm lion, is a fair picture of how that can feel from the inside. As a reflection rather than a forecast, it asks where courage is already present in your situation.

Strength reversed

Self-doubt, or force used where gentleness would work. The lion inside asks to be understood, not beaten.

Reversed, Strength is still the card of courage, patience and gentle power, read from the other side: the same theme blocked, delayed, overdone or turned inward. It is not a bad omen. It asks where courage has gone missing or been pushed too far, and what would set it right.

What the card shows

The plate shows a woman in a white robe garlanded with flowers gently closing the jaws of a calm lion, a figure-eight of light above her head, green hills and a mountain behind.

In the tradition this deck follows, the plate’s details are read this way: the lion as courage and appetite; the figure eight as endless possibility; and distant mountains as challenges still ahead. Together they are why Strength is read for courage, patience and gentle power.

Strength in love

For a question of the heart, Strength turns attention to courage. It may mirror a season of patience in a friendship or a marriage, and it asks, gently, whether gentle power is being offered as well as received. As a trump, Strength speaks to the larger pattern in how you love rather than to a single evening.

Strength in work and money

In work and money, Strength asks where courage belongs in what you are doing. Upright, it can mirror a time when patience serves the work; reversed, it may ask whether gentle power has slipped out of balance. As a trump, Strength speaks to the direction of a working life more than to one week’s accounts.

As a question to carry

What would change if you met this with patience instead of force?

Write it down, and come back to it when gentle power next comes up in your week.

Its place in the Major Arcana

Strength is trump VIII, card 9 of the twenty-two in the Major Arcana.

Read as the Fool’s journey, the trumps tell one story of a life, and Strength stands in the middle stage, where the traveller turns inward and meets fortune, sacrifice and endings. It follows The Chariot and leads to The Hermit: courage after the lesson of drive, and before the lesson of solitude.

Draw your own cards

Reading about Strength is one thing; drawing it in answer to your own question is another. Members draw from the full deck in the Almanac tarot: the card of the day, three cards, or the ten-card Celtic Cross, each card read in its place.
