The Chariot tarot card meaning

The Chariot
VIIThe Chariot

The Chariot is the card of drive, direction and resolve. Momentum gained by holding opposing forces together. The Chariot reflects progress that comes from focus and self-command, not from force alone.

The Chariot upright

Momentum gained by holding opposing forces together. The Chariot reflects progress that comes from focus and self-command, not from force alone.

When The Chariot falls the right way up, notice first where drive is already at work, then how direction and resolve gather round it. The scene, an armoured figure standing in a canopied chariot decorated with stars, carries that feeling without a word. It names something present, not something coming.

The Chariot reversed

Pulling in two directions at once, or pushing ahead without knowing where. Choose the direction before the speed.

Upside down, The Chariot asks you to look at drive and direction where they are uncomfortable rather than easy. Perhaps resolve is being refused, or perhaps it is being leaned on too much. Either way it is a mirror, and the choice of what to do stays with you.

What the card shows

The plate shows an armoured figure standing in a canopied chariot decorated with stars, two sphinxes, one dark and one pale, resting before it, a walled city behind, a crescent moon on each shoulder.

In the tradition this deck follows, the plate’s details are read this way: stars as hope and guidance from far off; and the moon as the hidden, the changing and the half seen. Together they are why The Chariot is read for drive, direction and resolve.

The Chariot in love

Read for a relationship, The Chariot asks how drive and direction are shared between two people. It describes a mood rather than an outcome: where resolve is present, and where it is missing. As a trump, The Chariot speaks to the larger pattern in how you love rather than to a single evening.

The Chariot in work and money

On the practical side of life, The Chariot is a card of drive. It may describe how direction is shaping your work now, and it invites a sober look at resolve before the next step. As a trump, The Chariot speaks to the direction of a working life more than to one week’s accounts.

As a question to carry

Where are you being pulled two ways, and which way is yours?

There is no right answer to it; The Chariot asks only that you look at direction honestly.

Its place in the Major Arcana

The Chariot is trump VII, card 8 of the twenty-two in the Major Arcana.

Read as the Fool’s journey, the trumps tell one story of a life, and The Chariot stands in the first stage of the story, where the traveller meets the teachers and powers of the outer world. It follows The Lovers and leads to Strength: drive after the lesson of union, and before the lesson of courage.

Draw your own cards

Reading about The Chariot is one thing; drawing it in answer to your own question is another. Members draw from the full deck in the Almanac tarot: the card of the day, three cards, or the ten-card Celtic Cross, each card read in its place.
