The Hermit upright

A season for stepping back. The Hermit reflects the value of solitude and study, and the light you find by looking inward.

Its three keys are solitude, reflection and inner light, and upright they work together. Think of a cloaked old figure standing alone on a snowy mountain peak at night: that is the mood The Hermit brings into a reading. It describes what is in view now; what you do with it stays yours.

The Hermit reversed

Withdrawal that has become isolation, or avoiding the quiet you need. Notice whether you are resting or hiding.

A reversed card is the same card turned around, so The Hermit reversed keeps its keys but shows them under strain. Reflection may be held back, or inner light may be leaning too hard on everything else. Treat it as a question, not a verdict.

What the card shows

The plate shows a cloaked old figure standing alone on a snowy mountain peak at night, holding up a lantern with a six-pointed star inside, leaning on a long staff.

In the tradition this deck follows, the plate’s details are read this way: distant mountains as challenges still ahead; the lantern as inner light in the dark; stars as hope and guidance from far off; and the staff as will and creative fire. Together they are why The Hermit is read for solitude, reflection and inner light.

The Hermit in love

In love, The Hermit brings solitude into the conversation. Upright, it can reflect a bond where reflection has room to grow; reversed, it may show where inner light has been held back or pushed too hard. As a trump, The Hermit speaks to the larger pattern in how you love rather than to a single evening.

The Hermit in work and money

For a question about work or money, The Hermit brings solitude and reflection to the table. It does not say what a decision should be; it shows where inner light is helping and where it is in the way. As a trump, The Hermit speaks to the direction of a working life more than to one week’s accounts.

Carry it through a day with The Hermit in mind and notice where solitude turns up.

Its place in the Major Arcana

The Hermit is trump IX, card 10 of the twenty-two in the Major Arcana.

Read as the Fool’s journey, the trumps tell one story of a life, and The Hermit stands in the middle stage, where the traveller turns inward and meets fortune, sacrifice and endings. It follows Strength and leads to Wheel of Fortune: solitude after the lesson of courage, and before the lesson of cycles.

Draw your own cards
