The Tower tarot card meaning

The Tower
XVIThe Tower

The Tower is the card of upheaval, revelation and clearing. A structure built on a false footing gives way. The Tower reflects sudden clarity, unwelcome perhaps, that clears the ground for something truer.

The Tower upright

A structure built on a false footing gives way. The Tower reflects sudden clarity, unwelcome perhaps, that clears the ground for something truer.

Upright, The Tower puts upheaval at the front of the picture, with revelation and clearing close behind it. The plate’s own image, a tall stone tower on a rocky peak struck by lightning, is a fair picture of how that can feel from the inside. As a reflection rather than a forecast, it asks where upheaval is already present in your situation.

The Tower reversed

Avoiding a necessary collapse, or bracing so hard that the shock lasts longer. What falls was not holding you up.

Reversed, The Tower is still the card of upheaval, revelation and clearing, read from the other side: the same theme blocked, delayed, overdone or turned inward. It is not a bad omen. It asks where upheaval has gone missing or been pushed too far, and what would set it right.

What the card shows

The plate shows a tall stone tower on a rocky peak struck by lightning, its crown blown off, flames from the windows, two figures falling through the dark sky, golden sparks falling like rain.

In the tradition this deck follows, the plate’s details are read this way: a castle or tower as what we build for safety; storm and rain as upheaval or grief; and a crown as authority and its responsibility. Together they are why The Tower is read for upheaval, revelation and clearing.

The Tower in love

Read for a relationship, The Tower asks how upheaval and revelation are shared between two people. It describes a mood rather than an outcome: where clearing is present, and where it is missing. As a trump, The Tower speaks to the larger pattern in how you love rather than to a single evening.

The Tower in work and money

In work and money, The Tower asks where upheaval belongs in what you are doing. Upright, it can mirror a time when revelation serves the work; reversed, it may ask whether clearing has slipped out of balance. As a trump, The Tower speaks to the direction of a working life more than to one week’s accounts.

As a question to carry

What would you build if this foundation were not there?

There is no right answer to it; The Tower asks only that you look at revelation honestly.

Its place in the Major Arcana

The Tower is trump XVI, card 17 of the twenty-two in the Major Arcana.

Read as the Fool’s journey, the trumps tell one story of a life, and The Tower stands in the last stage, the descent into shadow and the climb back toward light and wholeness. It follows The Devil and leads to The Star: upheaval after the lesson of attachment, and before the lesson of hope.

Draw your own cards

Reading about The Tower is one thing; drawing it in answer to your own question is another. Members draw from the full deck in the Almanac tarot: the card of the day, three cards, or the ten-card Celtic Cross, each card read in its place.
