The Star upright

Calm after the storm. The Star reflects hope that is quiet and real, healing in progress, and a sense of direction returning.

Its three keys are hope, renewal and guidance, and upright they work together. Think of a kneeling figure in a simple robe by a still pool at night: that is the mood The Star brings into a reading. It describes what is in view now; what you do with it stays yours.

The Star reversed

Discouragement, or losing sight of what guides you. The star is still there behind the clouds.

A reversed card is the same card turned around, so The Star reversed keeps its keys but shows them under strain. Renewal may be held back, or guidance may be leaning too hard on everything else. Treat it as a question, not a verdict.

What the card shows

The plate shows a kneeling figure in a simple robe by a still pool at night, pouring water from two jugs, one into the pool and one onto the land, a great eight-rayed star above with seven smaller stars around it, a small bird on a tree in the distance.

In the tradition this deck follows, the plate’s details are read this way: water as feeling and the inner life; stars as hope and guidance from far off; and birds as thought and spirit. Together they are why The Star is read for hope, renewal and guidance.

The Star in love

For a question of the heart, The Star turns attention to hope. It may mirror a season of renewal in a friendship or a marriage, and it asks, gently, whether guidance is being offered as well as received. As a trump, The Star speaks to the larger pattern in how you love rather than to a single evening.

The Star in work and money

For a question about work or money, The Star brings hope and renewal to the table. It does not say what a decision should be; it shows where guidance is helping and where it is in the way. As a trump, The Star speaks to the direction of a working life more than to one week’s accounts.

As a question to carry

What gives you hope, even quietly, right now?

Write it down, and come back to it when guidance next comes up in your week.

Its place in the Major Arcana

The Star is trump XVII, card 18 of the twenty-two in the Major Arcana.

Read as the Fool’s journey, the trumps tell one story of a life, and The Star stands in the last stage, the descent into shadow and the climb back toward light and wholeness. It follows The Tower and leads to The Moon: hope after the lesson of upheaval, and before the lesson of uncertainty.

Draw your own cards

Reading about The Star is one thing; drawing it in answer to your own question is another. Members draw from the full deck in the Almanac tarot: the card of the day, three cards, or the ten-card Celtic Cross, each card read in its place.
