The Magician upright

Everything you need is already on the table. The Magician reflects the moment when attention and ability meet and an idea can be made real.

Its three keys are skill, focus and will, and upright they work together. Think of a robed figure at a workbench under an open sky: that is the mood The Magician brings into a reading. It describes what is in view now; what you do with it stays yours.

The Magician reversed

Talent scattered, or used to impress rather than to make. Ask whether your tools are serving your purpose.

A reversed card is the same card turned around, so The Magician reversed keeps its keys but shows them under strain. Focus may be held back, or will may be leaning too hard on everything else. Treat it as a question, not a verdict.

What the card shows

The plate shows a robed figure at a workbench under an open sky, one hand raising a wand to the heavens and the other pointing to the earth, on the table a cup, a sword, a coin and a staff, roses and lilies growing around, a figure-eight of light above the head.

In the tradition this deck follows, the plate’s details are read this way: the staff as will and creative fire; the cup as the heart and what it holds; the sword as thought, truth and decision; and the coin as work, money and the material world. Together they are why The Magician is read for skill, focus and will.

The Magician in love

Read for a relationship, The Magician asks how skill and focus are shared between two people. It describes a mood rather than an outcome: where will is present, and where it is missing. As a trump, The Magician speaks to the larger pattern in how you love rather than to a single evening.

The Magician in work and money

For a question about work or money, The Magician brings skill and focus to the table. It does not say what a decision should be; it shows where will is helping and where it is in the way. As a trump, The Magician speaks to the direction of a working life more than to one week’s accounts.

As a question to carry

Which of your skills have you been waiting for permission to use?

There is no right answer to it; The Magician asks only that you look at focus honestly.

Its place in the Major Arcana

The Magician is trump I, card 2 of the twenty-two in the Major Arcana.

Read as the Fool’s journey, the trumps tell one story of a life, and The Magician stands in the first stage of the story, where the traveller meets the teachers and powers of the outer world. It follows The Fool and leads to The High Priestess: skill after the lesson of beginnings, and before the lesson of intuition.

Draw your own cards

Reading about The Magician is one thing; drawing it in answer to your own question is another. Members draw from the full deck in the Almanac tarot: the card of the day, three cards, or the ten-card Celtic Cross, each card read in its place.
