Major Arcana

The Fool tarot card meaning

The Fool
0The Fool

The Fool is the card of beginnings, trust and the open road. A threshold, and the freedom to cross it before every answer is in. The Fool asks for trust in your own footing more than certainty about the path.

The Fool upright

A threshold, and the freedom to cross it before every answer is in. The Fool asks for trust in your own footing more than certainty about the path.

Upright, The Fool puts beginnings at the front of the picture, with trust and the open road close behind it. The plate’s own image, a young traveller in a plain cloak walking toward the edge of a high cliff at sunrise, is a fair picture of how that can feel from the inside. As a reflection rather than a forecast, it asks where beginnings is already present in your situation.

The Fool reversed

Leaping without looking, or standing at the edge so long the moment passes. Notice which of the two this is.

Reversed, The Fool is still the card of beginnings, trust and the open road, read from the other side: the same theme blocked, delayed, overdone or turned inward. It is not a bad omen. It asks where beginnings has gone missing or been pushed too far, and what would set it right.

What the card shows

The plate shows a young traveller in a plain cloak walking toward the edge of a high cliff at sunrise, a small bundle on a staff over one shoulder, a white rose in hand, a small dog leaping at his heels, distant mountains, a rayed sun above.

In the tradition this deck follows, the plate’s details are read this way: the cliff edge as a risk taken in trust; the dawn as a new start after the dark; the staff as will and creative fire; and roses as desire and devotion. Together they are why The Fool is read for beginnings, trust and the open road.

The Fool in love

In love, The Fool brings beginnings into the conversation. Upright, it can reflect a bond where trust has room to grow; reversed, it may show where the open road has been held back or pushed too hard. As a trump, The Fool speaks to the larger pattern in how you love rather than to a single evening.

The Fool in work and money

In work and money, The Fool asks where beginnings belongs in what you are doing. Upright, it can mirror a time when trust serves the work; reversed, it may ask whether the open road has slipped out of balance. As a trump, The Fool speaks to the direction of a working life more than to one week’s accounts.

As a question to carry

What would you begin if you did not need to know how it ends?

Carry it through a day with The Fool in mind and notice where beginnings turns up.

Its place in the Major Arcana

The Fool is numbered 0, the one trump that stands outside the sequence of the twenty-two cards of the Major Arcana.

Read as the Fool’s journey, the trumps tell one story of a life, and the Fool is its traveller, walking through every other card. The first meeting is with The Magician, the card of skill, focus and will.

Draw your own cards

Reading about The Fool is one thing; drawing it in answer to your own question is another. Members draw from the full deck in the Almanac tarot: the card of the day, three cards, or the ten-card Celtic Cross, each card read in its place.
