What sets Four Horsemen apart
The first four seals each release a rider on a coloured horse: white, red, black, and a pale or greenish one (Greek chloros). Death is named as the last rider, with Hades following, and the four are given authority over a fourth of the earth to kill with sword, famine, plague and wild beasts (6:8). That is the same list as God's four judgments in Ezekiel 14:21, and the horses recall the four chariots of Zechariah 6.

- Second: red horse, a great sword, takes peace from the earth, 6:4
- Third: black horse, a pair of scales; a measure of wheat for a day's wage, 6:5 and 6

Often mistaken for something else: The text names only Death for the fourth rider; 'Pestilence' and the labels War and Famine are later popular naming, and the white rider is read as Christ or as conquest, depending on the interpreter.
