The Hierophant upright

The wisdom handed down: teachers, institutions, rituals that have carried people before you. The Hierophant asks what you can learn from what already exists.

Its three keys are tradition, teaching and belonging, and upright they work together. Think of a robed teacher with a triple crown seated between two stone pillars: that is the mood The Hierophant brings into a reading. It describes what is in view now; what you do with it stays yours.

The Hierophant reversed

Following a rule that no longer fits you, or rejecting all guidance on principle. Both can keep you from your own path.

A reversed card is the same card turned around, so The Hierophant reversed keeps its keys but shows them under strain. Teaching may be held back, or belonging may be leaning too hard on everything else. Treat it as a question, not a verdict.

What the card shows

The plate shows a robed teacher with a triple crown seated between two stone pillars, one hand raised in blessing, two kneeling students before him, two crossed keys at his feet.

In the tradition this deck follows, the plate’s details are read this way: a crown as authority and its responsibility; paired pillars as the two sides of every question; and crossed keys as knowledge handed down. Together they are why The Hierophant is read for tradition, teaching and belonging.

The Hierophant in love

For a question of the heart, The Hierophant turns attention to tradition. It may mirror a season of teaching in a friendship or a marriage, and it asks, gently, whether belonging is being offered as well as received. As a trump, The Hierophant speaks to the larger pattern in how you love rather than to a single evening.

The Hierophant in work and money

For a question about work or money, The Hierophant brings tradition and teaching to the table. It does not say what a decision should be; it shows where belonging is helping and where it is in the way. As a trump, The Hierophant speaks to the direction of a working life more than to one week’s accounts.

As a question to carry

Which tradition or teacher still has something to give you?

Write it down, and come back to it when belonging next comes up in your week.

Its place in the Major Arcana

The Hierophant is trump V, card 6 of the twenty-two in the Major Arcana.

Read as the Fool’s journey, the trumps tell one story of a life, and The Hierophant stands in the first stage of the story, where the traveller meets the teachers and powers of the outer world. It follows The Emperor and leads to The Lovers: tradition after the lesson of structure, and before the lesson of union.

Draw your own cards

Reading about The Hierophant is one thing; drawing it in answer to your own question is another. Members draw from the full deck in the Almanac tarot: the card of the day, three cards, or the ten-card Celtic Cross, each card read in its place.
