Justice upright

Clear sight and fair weighing. Justice reflects cause and effect, honesty with yourself, and decisions made with the whole truth in view.

When Justice falls the right way up, notice first where fairness is already at work, then how truth and accountability gather round it. The scene, a crowned figure in red robes seated between two pillars, carries that feeling without a word. It names something present, not something coming.

Justice reversed

An imbalance you have been avoiding, or a judgement made too harshly. Weigh it again, with the facts.

Upside down, Justice asks you to look at fairness and truth where they are uncomfortable rather than easy. Perhaps accountability is being refused, or perhaps it is being leaned on too much. Either way it is a mirror, and the choice of what to do stays with you.

What the card shows

The plate shows a crowned figure in red robes seated between two pillars, holding upright a double-edged sword in one hand and balanced golden scales in the other, a purple veil behind.

In the tradition this deck follows, the plate’s details are read this way: a crown as authority and its responsibility; paired pillars as the two sides of every question; the sword as thought, truth and decision; and scales as fairness and weighing. Together they are why Justice is read for fairness, truth and accountability.

Justice in love

For a question of the heart, Justice turns attention to fairness. It may mirror a season of truth in a friendship or a marriage, and it asks, gently, whether accountability is being offered as well as received. As a trump, Justice speaks to the larger pattern in how you love rather than to a single evening.

Justice in work and money

On the practical side of life, Justice is a card of fairness. It may describe how truth is shaping your work now, and it invites a sober look at accountability before the next step. As a trump, Justice speaks to the direction of a working life more than to one week’s accounts.

As a question to carry

What would a fair decision look like here, including fairness to yourself?

Write it down, and come back to it when accountability next comes up in your week.

Its place in the Major Arcana

Justice is trump XI, card 12 of the twenty-two in the Major Arcana.

Read as the Fool’s journey, the trumps tell one story of a life, and Justice stands in the middle stage, where the traveller turns inward and meets fortune, sacrifice and endings. It follows Wheel of Fortune and leads to The Hanged Man: fairness after the lesson of cycles, and before the lesson of pause.

Draw your own cards

Reading about Justice is one thing; drawing it in answer to your own question is another. Members draw from the full deck in the Almanac tarot: the card of the day, three cards, or the ten-card Celtic Cross, each card read in its place.
