Judgement upright

A call to rise. Judgement reflects a moment of honest reckoning with the past and the clarity to answer a deeper calling.

Upright, Judgement puts awakening at the front of the picture, with reckoning and calling close behind it. The plate’s own image, a winged angel in the clouds blowing a trumpet hung with a banner of a cross, is a fair picture of how that can feel from the inside. As a reflection rather than a forecast, it asks where awakening is already present in your situation.

Judgement reversed

Self-judgement too harsh to learn from, or ignoring a call you have clearly heard. Listen and forgive.

Reversed, Judgement is still the card of awakening, reckoning and calling, read from the other side: the same theme blocked, delayed, overdone or turned inward. It is not a bad omen. It asks where awakening has gone missing or been pushed too far, and what would set it right.

What the card shows

The plate shows a winged angel in the clouds blowing a trumpet hung with a banner of a cross, figures rising from open stone tombs below with arms raised, mountains and sea behind.

In the tradition this deck follows, the plate’s details are read this way: wings as messages from above; clouds as what is uncertain or still forming; the trumpet as a call that wakes; and distant mountains as challenges still ahead. Together they are why Judgement is read for awakening, reckoning and calling.

Judgement in love

For a question of the heart, Judgement turns attention to awakening. It may mirror a season of reckoning in a friendship or a marriage, and it asks, gently, whether calling is being offered as well as received. As a trump, Judgement speaks to the larger pattern in how you love rather than to a single evening.

Judgement in work and money

In work and money, Judgement asks where awakening belongs in what you are doing. Upright, it can mirror a time when reckoning serves the work; reversed, it may ask whether calling has slipped out of balance. As a trump, Judgement speaks to the direction of a working life more than to one week’s accounts.

As a question to carry

What calling have you heard but not yet answered?

Write it down, and come back to it when calling next comes up in your week.

Its place in the Major Arcana

Judgement is trump XX, card 21 of the twenty-two in the Major Arcana.

Read as the Fool’s journey, the trumps tell one story of a life, and Judgement stands in the last stage, the descent into shadow and the climb back toward light and wholeness. It follows The Sun and leads to The World: awakening after the lesson of joy, and before the lesson of completion.

Draw your own cards

Reading about Judgement is one thing; drawing it in answer to your own question is another. Members draw from the full deck in the Almanac tarot: the card of the day, three cards, or the ten-card Celtic Cross, each card read in its place.
