The twelve ideas

Jung called it synchronicity.
The Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung called it synchronicity: two events joined not by cause but by meaning, an inner state and an outer event that answer each other.

A golden beetle at the window.
Jung told of a patient describing a dream of a golden scarab. As she spoke, an insect tapped at the window. He caught it: a rose chafer, the nearest thing to a scarab.

The scarab: a sign of rebirth.
In ancient Egypt the scarab was a sign of rebirth, the beetle that rolls the Sun into the sky. Jung said his patient began to change after that day.

Written beside a Nobel physicist.
In 1952 Jung published his essay on synchronicity in one volume with Wolfgang Pauli, a physicist who had won the Nobel Prize in 1945.

Jung even tested astrology.
In the same essay Jung studied the charts of married couples, counting old marriage signs between the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant. The results were suggestive, he said, not proof.

Meaning, not cause.
Jung insisted synchronicity is not magic. The dream did not summon the beetle. What joins the two, he said, is meaning, which a mind recognises.

He borrowed an old alchemical phrase, unus mundus, one world, for the idea that mind and matter may be two faces of one hidden reality.

Science is not convinced.
Most scientists explain such moments by chance and by the mind's gift for finding patterns. In a lifetime of moments, some striking matches are bound to happen.

Why they matter anyway.
Even so, what we notice says something about us. A coincidence that stops you in your tracks is often pointing at a question you are already carrying.

Symbol
Angel numbers are its modern cousin.
Seeing the same numbers again and again, the modern angel numbers, is a cousin of the same experience: the world seeming to answer the question on your mind.
