Twelve disciples as twelve signs
J. H. Hill reads the twelve disciples as the twelve signs of the zodiac, the twelve months as angels of the Lord. In his list the first month, Janus, is Peter, the keybearer, with the cross-keys of the papal arms, and the last month is Thomas the Doubter, whose feast on 21 December falls at the winter solstice.
He gathers the number twelve across scripture: the twelve sons of Jacob, the twelve tribes, the twelve stones of the breastplate set in threes for the seasons, the twelve foundations of the Holy City and the twelve labors of Hercules.
